Does Ethnicity Matter?

Last weekend while visiting Chinatown, Dan Akaka claimed that his Hawaiian/Chinese ancestry will help him be reelected. Ed Case responded that the voters of Hawaii are color blind. Both views are wrong. Ed Case fails to realize that culture, which often overlaps ethnicity, is a significant source of each person’s worldview. Dan Akaka, though perhaps having greater awareness of those with a Hawaiian/Chinese mixed background, by the same claim would not have an advantage with other cultural groups. What our state needs is a Senator that has the sensitivity and ability to put forth legislation that helps everyone in Hawaii.
